Hotels in Kenya

Rooftop hotels in Kenya start with Nairobi, the city the site covers here, and its view is unlike any other capital's: towers on one side, open savanna on the other. The city sits at roughly 1,800 metres, so terrace evenings are cool and often clear.

Westlands is the centre of the rooftop scene, with hotel bars stacked above Waiyaki Way that fill up after work and stay busy late on weekends. From higher floors in Upper Hill and the CBD, the eye runs south past the round KICC tower toward the flat plains of Nairobi National Park and, on a clean evening, the ridge of the Ngong Hills to the southwest. Because Nairobi lies just south of the equator, the sun sets at almost the same hour all year. The dry spells from June to October and from January to March suit open-air terraces best, while the long rains push the crowd under cover. The selection is small, so book early.

What to expect

  • Nairobi: at about 1,800 metres, evenings turn cool quickly, so a light jacket helps on open terraces.
  • Nairobi: jacaranda trees turn the avenues purple around October and November, a sight best seen from above.
  • Nairobi: the dry months from June to October bring the clearest and most comfortable terrace evenings.
