Boutique
Boutique rooftop hotels are small, individually designed properties where the terrace feels like part of the house: a handful of tables, a plunge pool or an intimate bar, with the city close below.
Boutique rooftop hotels work at a different scale from the tower-top bars of big chains. With fewer rooms, the terrace rarely fills, the staff quickly learn each guest's habits, and the view sits closer to street level, which often makes it more intimate: tiled roofs, church bells, washing lines and domes rather than a distant grid of lights. They suit couples, solo travellers and anyone who prefers character to scale. In Lisbon, small hotels in Alfama and Chiado look over terracotta rooftops to the Tagus and São Jorge Castle. Marrakech riads turn the roof into a second living room facing the Koutoubia. Athens has compact hotels in Plaka and Monastiraki that frame the Acropolis from a few streets away, while Cape Town's boutique addresses near Bo-Kaap look straight up at Table Mountain. In Bogotá, the colonial houses of La Candelaria face the slopes of Monserrate. The trade-off: smaller terraces and, sometimes, no lift to the top.

Local tips
- Ask whether a lift reaches the roof, because many boutique hotels in historic districts such as Alfama or La Candelaria have only a narrow staircase up to the terrace.
- Book a room on the top floor when you can; in small hotels the upper rooms often open directly onto the terrace or have their own slice of the view.
- Check the terrace hours, since boutique rooftops on residential streets often close earlier in the evening out of respect for the neighbours, unlike bars on hotel towers.
- Reserve the rooftop for breakfast or an aperitif if the hotel allows it, as a terrace with a few tables can fill up with in-house guests alone at sunset.
- Bring a light layer for evenings in Lisbon, Bogotá or Cape Town; Atlantic wind or Bogotá's altitude cools the terrace quickly once the sun has gone down.
- Read recent reviews for noise, because a boutique hotel in a lively old quarter trades its central location and close view for street sounds late into the night.
