Skyline Views
Skyline views describe hotels whose rooftop or upper rooms face a city's towers and landmarks, so the outline of the skyline, and the way it lights up after dark, becomes the main reason to book.
Skyline views are about the outline of a city: towers stacked against the sky, a landmark you can name at a glance and the slow switch from daylight silhouettes to thousands of lit windows. The best window is the blue hour just after sunset, when the sky still holds colour and the buildings light up. New York sets the standard, with rooftops in Midtown framing the Empire State Building and the Chrysler spire, and terraces downtown facing One World Trade Center. Kuala Lumpur answers with the twin Petronas Towers and the KL Tower rising above Bukit Bintang, while Seoul spreads out from Lotte World Tower in Jamsil to Namsan and the Han River bridges. São Paulo offers the densest view of all, an almost endless field of high-rises along Avenida Paulista. Athens reads differently: a low white city broken by the Acropolis and Lycabettus Hill. Photographers and first-time visitors love these views; anyone after silence may prefer a garden.

Local tips
- Go up during the blue hour, the 20 to 40 minutes after sunset, when the sky keeps its colour and the towers switch on their lights one by one.
- Ask which direction your room or the rooftop faces, since the landmark you came for, such as the Empire State or the Petronas Towers, may be on the other side.
- Check air quality and haze forecasts in Kuala Lumpur, Bogotá or Hanoi, as dry-season haze or smog can soften distant towers on some days.
- Bring a small tripod or rest your phone on the railing for night shots, because many rooftop bars do not allow large camera gear at busy hours.
- Request a high floor rather than simply a city view, because a skyline seen from low down is often blocked by the building across the street.
- Visit once by day and once by night if you can, since cities like Athens and São Paulo look completely different in sunlight and after dark.
